On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the riverbank, where we thought there might be a place for prayer. We sat down and began to talk with the women who had gathered. One of those women was Lydia, a Gentile God-worshipper from the city of Thyatira, a dealer in purple cloth. As she listened, the Lord enabled her to embrace Paul's message. Once she and her household were baptized, she urged, "Now that you have decided that I am a believer in the Lord, come and stay in my house." And she persuaded us. - Luke the Scribe in Acts 16:13-15

From now until Super Bowl Sunday, February 1, the Youth Group asks that you bring non-perishable food items to the Welcome Center whenever you come to church and bring a donation February1 to put in the Youth's big soup pots after worship. All food and funds will be donated to the Intown Food Pantry which is in need of lots of food right now.

The next opportunity to join Morningside Presbyterian Church will be
Sunday, February 8.  We will offer an Inquirers' Class on
Sunday, February 1, which is your chance to know more about the history of Morningside, ask questions, learn a bit about the history of Presbyterianism and meet some people. On February 8, we have an orientation to the ministries of Morningside followed by an opportunity to join the church.  For more information, contact Baron Mullis (baron.mullis@morningsidepc.org).

The Session has called a congregational meeting following the 11 a.m. worship service this Sunday, February 1. The purpose of this annual meeting is for the congregation to receive the budget as information, to act on the pastors' terms of call, and to hear announcements related to the life of the church. Child care will continue.

This Sunday, February 1 is the deadline to sign up for the Lenten experience with RHINO (Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans) March 4-8.  Contact shepherd Roland Behm roland.behm@gmail.com with any questions and be sure to give your check for $265 (written to MPC with RHINO in the memo line) directly to Roland.  There are already nine signed up to go. Many others have done it previously and would be happy to tell you about their experience. We will carpool to NOLA on Wednesday, work with RHINO partners three days and return after the 8 a.m. Sunday worship service at St. Charles Ave. Presbyterian Church. Two dinners are provided by the church and there are opportunities to explore the city on additional evenings. Lodging is in the Brent House Hotel and the price quoted is for double occupancy.

Meditation is an ancient practice of stilling the "outer thinking mind" and allowing the "inner intuitive mind" to arise. It is a discipline that has been practiced by countless people from cultures and traditions around the world for thousands of years. Members and visitors of Morningside Presbyterian are invited to practice this simple technique in the benign discipline of a group. In addition, we will read and discuss books on contemplative Christianity beginning with "Putting on the Mind of Christ: The Inner Work of Christian Spirituality" by Jim Marion. We will meet the second Sunday of each month, beginning February 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Welcome Center. For more information contact Ken Sharpe, kensharpe@bellsouth.net.
