The Six Star Refugee Partnership

The Six Star Refugee Partnership is a group of Atlanta churches which helps refugee families resettle in Atlanta. The group helps three families at any one point in time and works with those families for two years. Six Star provides housing, furniture and initial supplies, transportation to medical appointments, employment assistance, English language classes, and other basic guidance to services needed when settling in a new country. The houses are located behind Druid Hills Baptist Church, near the intersection of N. Highland Avenue and Ponce de Leon Avenue.

Morningside’s participation:

The Six Star Refugee Partnership provides volunteer opportunities for a wide variety of skills and interests.

When new families arrive, we collect household goods and provide volunteers to clean and refurbish the houses. Currently, we are involved in tutoring both children and adults. As of the start of school in the fall of 2007, we are always seeking tutors for 1st, 3rd and 5th grades any afternoon after 4 p.m., Math, Science, & Literature tutors for high school any Mon.-Thur. 4-7 p.m. and English as a Second Language for parents.

How you can get involved:

Since most of us will never be official ambassadors to another country, we can each build our own small bridge to another country and culture by helping a family resettle here. The relationships that are forged extend far beyond just a contact with one family. That family tells their family back home about the kind and helpful Americans they have met, and that one little bridge toward better understanding between countries is built...and so it goes with each person, each act of generosity and caring. Please consider donating your time or goods.

Volunteer opportunities fall into the following general categories: Teaching English, tutoring the children (helping with homework, etc), transportation (farmer's market, doctors, etc), handyman work, yardwork. English tutoring for the adults is being done between 6:30-8:00 in the evening at the family's home in the Poncey Highlands area. No experience for either is required. More tutors are needed.

Work to be done at Six Star!  With the exciting news of a refugee family moving into their own residence, it is time to prepare a home for another family.  Please contact Holly Campbell at 404-233-0045 or hollycampbell1@gmail.com if you have anything you would like to donate or if you could help on the February 9 workday.  Click here for a complete list of furniture and household items needed.
