Life@Morningside for October 1, 2017

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

Welcome to worship at Morningside Presbyterian Church.

Baron Mullis, Senior Pastor is our preacher and Matt Frease, Youth Director, and Eliza Smith, Intern, will be our liturgists.

• Large print hymnals and Bibles as well as hearing aids are available; ushers will gladly assist.

• Please complete the information in the Friendship Pad at the end of the pews and pass the pads down and back again during the Concerns portion of worship.

• Children are welcomed and encouraged in worship every Sunday. Worship bags for children can be found in the Narthex.

• Childcare for 0-23 months is in Room 105, and Room 012 for 2 and 3 year olds.

• Pre-K/K in room 001.

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY

We join this Sunday in a celebration observed by several Christian denominations, taking place on the first Sunday of every October, that promotes Christian unity and ecumenical cooperation. The tradition originated in the Shadyside Presbyterian Church (Pittsburg, PA) in 1933, was adopted throughout the US Presbyterian Church in 1936, and subsequently spread to other denominations. In 1940, the Federal Council of Churches (now the National Council of Churches) endorsed World Communion Sunday and began to promote it to Christian churches worldwide. Today, we celebrate communion with believers across the world. Notice the various fabrics and loaves of bread on the Communion Table, symbolizing our global connectedness to each other through food and cloth. Join your fellow travelers at the table of grace.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

This special service recognizes our animals that make an important contribution to the beauty in our lives. All Morningside members with pets are welcome to bring them tonight at 6 p.m. so that we may bless them and give thanks to God for their life. We ask that your pet is properly restrained either by carrier or leash, and if your pet is not “pet-friendly” please bring a picture of him/her.

NOMINATIONS HAVE BEGUN

We are seeking your nominations for Elders for the Session and Deacons for the Board of Deacons. Nomination forms will be in the bulletin, the Narthex, and the Welcome Center. You can turn in nomination forms to the church office, the offering plate or in one of the boxes in the Narthex and Welcome Center.

COMMITMENT SEASON HAS BEGUN

The annual Commitment Season has begun at Morningside, and we are grateful for the exciting faith opportunities before us. We look forward to journeying together in 2018 as we worship together, serve together, and grow together. We ask that you prayerfully consider your family’s pledge for 2018 and join us as we pledge support on Sunday, October 29.

PRESBYTERIAN DISASTER ASSISTANCE

In response to Hurricane Harvey, Irma, Maria and the earthquakes in Mexico, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is organizing a response to help those affected and restore hope. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is the emergency response and refugee program of the denomination, committed to the long-term journey of recovery of communities adversely affected by a crisis or catastrophic event. We ask that you please give a gift offering (see insert) to support PDA.

MONTREAT

There are few things so enjoyable as a hot cup of coffee on a cool autumn morning on the porch of the William Black Lodge in the North Carolina Mountains with your family around you… so you won’t want to miss our congregational retreat from Thursday, October 20 - Sunday, October 22. Registration forms are available in the Narthex and Welcome Center. Turn them in to the church office with an attached check. Our retreat is appropriate for all ages and is a wonderful way to “go deeper” with your church family.

THREE YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN

Please plan to stay after service on Sunday, October 8 for the presentation of Morningside’s 3 year Strategic Plan, 2018-2020. The presentation will include insights and learnings from the congregational survey and will share prioritized initiatives identified from congregational input throughout the past months. The presentation will immediately follow the 8:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. services.

NEW ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT
SERIES STARTS OCTOBER 15

As an observant Jew, everything Jesus demonstrated and taught about the Kingdom of God was understood by his hearers and disciples through the filter of their culture and history. Appreciating that filter adds a critical, rich layer to our understanding of the Bible. Join us as we study The Jewish Jesus. This will be a four-week study of Jesus’s cultural and religious contexts, both as a person and as God’s Messiah.

PRESCHOOL HAS AN OPENING

We need our community to spread the word that we have one PreK student opening here at Morningside Presbyterian Preschool. We are seeking to fill this spot as soon as possible. Tell your friends and neighbors that we have an opening for a PreK student in our warm and nurturing program.

PLEASE HELP

Through no fault of his own, Bienfait is in great need of a new job and any work on the weekends he can get. He is a painter and carpenter and can do other construction-related work. If anyone has a connection to a full-time job or has work at their own home he might be able to do, please contact Holly Campbell at hollycampbell1@gmail.com or Sandy Ryan at amSr@outlook.com

Faith Development at Morningside

Michael Morgan continues the series of classes about congregational song, exploring songs from English, Scottish, and American traditions from 1700 – 1950.

Faith Formation For Families

Join other parents in this class resourced by Rev. Beth Waltemath and Mardee Rightmyer as we discuss the challenges and joys of raising children with gratitude, compassion and faith.
