Life@Morningside for April 9, 2017

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

Welcome to worship at Morningside Presbyterian Church.

Baron Mullis, Senior Pastor is our preacher and Beth Waltemath, Associate for Mission and Faith Development is our liturgist.

• Large print hymnals and Bibles as well as hearing aids are available; ushers will gladly assist.

• Please complete the information in the Friendship Pad at the end of the pews and pass the pads down and back again during the Concerns portion of worship.

• Children are welcomed and encouraged in worship every Sunday. Worship bags for children can be found in the Narthex.

• Childcare for 0-23 months is in Room 105, and Room 012 for 2 and 3 year olds.

• Pre-K/K are in room 001.

GRACE OF THE EARTH

Banner#1 is entitled “Grace of the Earth.” The green fabrics and batik prints of foliage represent the path strewn with branches and palm leaves laid to honor Jesus as he entered Jerusalem. The batiks show the clouding of the sun in the sky with gray-green shading. The fabrics move from light to dark representing the impending crucifixion.

GOD’S POWER IN OUR MIDST

Banner #2 is entitled “God’s Power in Our Midst” and symbolizes the night of Jesus’ arrest and ultimately the crucifixion. The rust and gold batiks our eyes see visually interpret the blood moon with the brown, gold and dark batiks left to represent the wrenching agony of the event. Again, the fabric coloring moves from light to dark representing the power of God’s love for humanity through Christ’s life, death and resurrection.

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING

Presbyterians have a history of working together to build a more just and sustainable future. We will take a special offering today. When you give to One Great Hour of Sharing, you are supporting the gifts and talents of people and communities all over the world.

A ROARING SUCCESS!

Our congregational survey has just wrapped up and we hit our goal for participation. Thank you for taking the time to offer input on your hopes for Morningside! The Strategic Planning Committee is currently taking the information from the survey and listening sessions and crafting a plan for the next three years. If you weren’t able to take the survey or attend a session, we would still love your input. To do so, contact Jeff Peters at jeffcpeters@gmail.com

LGBT & FRIENDS

You’re invited to join LGBT & Friends for their April meeting which will be on Tuesday, April 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the home of Emilie Paille and Jeanne McCarthy. Landscape architect Peter Frawley will be our special guest, sharing his expertise for creating the yard of your dreams this spring and summer. Bring your landscaping questions, and an appetite! Emilie and Jeanne’s address is 1413 Northview Ave., Atlanta 30306. We ask for a small goodwill donation of $10 per person to cover the cost of food and drink. Please RSVP to b.walkuski@gmail.com

SUPPORT OUR ADOPTED FAMILY

Some of us can’t imagine what it is like to be in a land far different from the one we grew up in. Some of us may even have a difficult time understanding just how hard it is to try to adapt to your new surroundings when everyone around you speaks a different language. Here at Morningside, we are a family, and a part of being a family means that we take care of each other. We ask that each one of you take a moment out of your week or even a day out of your month to simply help the Kinumbe-Bauma family adjust to life in Atlanta as best as possible. Volunteer to transport our refugee family to and from church and/or help Bienfait find a job with a painting crew or hire him yourself for a painting or carpentry job at your home. He volunteered with our crew at Habitat last Saturday and his attentiveness to detail was hard to beat. We’d also like to invite our refugee family to the Easter Egg Hunt. If you are able to bring them or to take them on another family fun outing on a weekday afternoon (after 1 p.m.) or on another Saturday, contact Katye Watts katyemae@gmail.com. Never get tired of doing little things for others because in truth, it’s those little things that occupy the biggest part of their hearts.

HABITAT BUILD

You can be a part of building a home for the Valdez family by volunteering at atlantahabitat.volunteerhub. Anyone 16 years or older can sign up.

EASTER EGG HUNT

Our annual event will occur on Saturday, April 15. The gathering will happen at 10:30 a.m. and the call to the post will occur at 11 a.m. sharp. We will need help hiding eggs, setting up tables for face-painting, securing the perimeter and cleanup. Contact Sarah Tomaka, sarah.tomaka@gmail.com, for the SignUp link to help. Also, we have bags of two dozen eggs available in the narthex for you to take home, fill with candy or stickers, and bring back before this Saturday, April 15. We need these and more to have a successful hunt. Absolutely no nuts please!

FAMILY FUN DAY

Our preschool’s annual family fun day and fund-raiser will happen on Saturday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Don’t miss new events including a $15 ‘tasting menu’ to determine our finest Grill Master. If you don’t have kids to bring to our campus for all the activities, sign up to volunteer for a short shift. Contact Kimberly Williams kew412@gmail.com to sign on.

RHO READERS

Our co-ed book group, the RHO Readers, will follow a fantastic story that involves our 16th President, on Sunday, April 23, at 12:30 p.m. in the Session Room. All are welcome to join! The meeting date has been changed due to the Easter holiday.

Faith Development at Morningside

ADULT CLASS

No class next week.

CHILDREN

We celebrate Jesus! We will learn about Palm Sunday and Jesus entering Jerusalem on the back of a young donkey. This was seen as an act of great humility - Jesus is the prince of peace! Matthew 21:1-11
