Life @ Morningside for July 27, 2014

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY
Welcome to worship at Morningside Presbyterian
Church. Please complete the information in
the Friendship Pad at the end of the pews and
pass the pads down and back again during the
Concerns portion of worship. Worship notebooks
and books for children are located in the
library. Nursery for infants and toddlers is in
Room 105; 2 year olds are in Room 012. Children
ages 3-10 are invited to leave after the
Peace of Christ for special classes: Threes,
fours, and fives-Room 011; K-2nd grade-Room
003; 3rd-5th grade-Room 001.

SERVICE MUSIC
The Prelude Arioso in F Major is one of
G. F. Handel’s most majestic and eloquent
ariosos. This one starts deceptively simply, but
ends up with full organ in a grand allargando.
The Offertory, the Allegretto from Handel’s
Royal Water Music Suite, is a lively tune. Handel
actually had his orchestra play this on a barge on
the Thames River in London, as was the style for
aristocrats and nobility enjoying music of the day
while boating.
The Postlude, Festive Trumpet Tune, by David
German, is a festive arrangement for solo organ.
It is rhythmic and grand, with a full flourish at
the end in B Major, a very bright key for a festive,
triumphant sound.
- We invite those who wish to remain seated until the
postlude has ended.

WELCOME GUEST ORGANIST
Randall Romig hails from Pennsylvania, with
bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the
Pennsylvania University System. He has been in
metro-Atlanta for more than 30 years and has
been serving as an interim/substitute organist
for most of those years in many metro churches,
in addition to his full-time job in advertising. He
has been Chairman of the Board for both the
Georgia Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta
Opera Guild. He currently sits on the Board of
the Harrower Opera Workshop at Georgia State
University. He and his wife, Dawn, have three
grown daughters and nine grandchildren.

LAY READER
In keeping with the Presbyterian tenet of the
priesthood of all believers, Morningside members
participate regularly in worship leadership.
This Sunday’s lay reader is Daisy
Ottmann.

MISSION CAMP ICE SCREAM YOU SCREAM
Everyone is invited to the ice cream social in
Fellowship Hall offered by the Mission Camp
attendees today after worship, when we will share
about our week of outreach.

VOLUNTEER FOR CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS
The summer is not a slow time for children's
programming at MPC - especially with Sunday
School Kick Off being the second Sunday in August.
If anyone has 2-4 hours July 29-August 7,
there are quite a few random projects needing
attention at this time - reorganizing class supplies,
preparing new music notebooks for our
elementary age Children's Worship, and preparing
signage, crafts and games for kick-off.
Contact Melinda if you have a few hours to give
towards these efforts.

SUNDAY SCHOOL KICK-OFF
Don’t miss the celebration of a new school year.
On Sunday, August 10, 9:45-10:45 a.m. in
Fellowship Hall, kids of all ages are invited to a
light breakfast and fun activities with their parents.
There will be face painting, animal costumes,
games, music with Mrs. Shipley and
“moving up” to new classes.

MORNINGSIDE PRESBYTERIAN PRESCHOOL (MPP)
For the next school year, there are still openings
for toddlers (who must be 15 months old
by Sept. 1) and one opening for pre-K. As you
consider when to start your child in preschool,
keep in mind that once you are part of the preschool
community, your child has a spot for
subsequent years. Twos classes are often filled
with current students before we reach open
enrollment.

SIX STAR
The Six Star Refugee Partnership will receive a
new family this summer, and we need to stock a
new apartment to welcome the family. Needs
include twin, double or queen bed frames (we
are required by law to buy new mattresses),
sofa, chairs, lamps, end tables, bedroom furniture,
etc. Volunteers are needed to help move
and set up furniture. If you have any furniture
to donate, or are interested in helping, please
contact Holly Campbell
hollycampbell1@gmail.com or 404.435.0676.

SANCTUARY FLOWERS
A flower calendar is posted on the bulletin
board in the hallway outside the Session Room,
and if you wish to give flowers in honor or in
memory of a loved one, we invite you to write
your name and phone number next to the desired
date. It is possible to share a date with
other members if you want to give one arrangement
or you may sign up alone to give both arrangements.
Contact Anna Best in the church
office office@morningsidepc.org for more information.

SAVE THE DATE
It’s not too soon to mark off October 17-19 on
your calendar and plan to get away to cool and
lovely Montreat, NC, for our sixth annual allchurch
retreat! Each year, it’s been an event
to remember for the whole family. Watch for
further details in the next couple of months.
