Christian Education for Adults
Adult Christian education opportunities are available seven days a week at Morningside Presbyterian - not only on Sunday mornings, but on weekday mornings and evenings. Whether in a one-time community forum, an eight-week small group study, or in regular weekly or monthly gatherings, there are options for everyone. We explore biblical, theological, spiritual and ethical topics together in these varied offerings. Brief descriptions of some of our regular opportunities follow, with more detailed information available on linked pages. If you have questions regarding any of the details of these opportunities, please contact Program Director Melinda Sandkam.
Exploring the Book: Biblical Themes and the Life of Faith - meets on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m. in the Morningside Room 107, and is led by Associate Pastor Chris Henry. Some of the previous segments of study - ranging in length from three to ten weeks - have included Theology of the Cross, Writings of the New Testament Apocrypha, Birth Narratives, Christology, Acts of the Holy Spirit, The Gospel of Luke, Empty Tomb, Resurrection of the Body, Let Justice Roll, and Tales of the End: The Book of Revelation and Contemporary Faith. Click here for more information about the current study focus.
Joanna Adams' First Wednesday Women's Bible Study - meets on the first Wednesday of each month from September to May, from 9:15-10:30 a.m. While our renovations are ongoing, we are meeting in the former parlor - the "new Morningside Room" - but still at 9:15 a.m., still with coffee and pastries before the study and still with childcare in Room 105! Click here for more information about the current study focus.
Theology on Tap - this monthly gathering for men meets on one Tuesday each month at
7:00 p.m. at the home of one of our members. Led by Associate Pastor Chris Henry, past discussion topics have included 'Why Church?', 'Prayer & the Workday World', 'What About "Them"?: How Christians Relate to People of Other Faiths', and 'Presbyterianism 101: Everything You Want to Know about our Denomination but were Afraid to Ask.' Click here for more information about the upcoming gathering.
Women's Roundtable - meets on the fourth Monday of the month (January-April and August-November) from 6:30-8:45 p.m. at the home of a member. Launched in January 2007, this group invites the women of Morningside - and the community at large - to come together as a roundtable where we can connect through sharing knowledge, ideas and concerns. The MPC Women's Roundtable invites a dynamic speaker each month to address a topic affecting our lives, either personally or as part of the community around us. Each Roundtable evening includes dinner, time for fellowship and an inspired intellectual conversation at a home here in the Morningside neighborhood. Click here for details about past and upcoming topics and speakers, and our next scheduled gathering.
Small Group Bible Study - meeting on eight consecutive Wednesday nights from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., our inaugural group began on April 2. This study group will explore the writings of the New Testament using the Disciple Short Term Study, "An Invitation to the New Testament". If you are interested in deepening your faith, Biblical understanding, and connection to other Morningside members through this self-led Bible Study, please contact Associate Pastor Chris Henry. Small Group Bible Studies will continue on different days and times as more groups come together. Be sure to let us know of your interest as these groups are continually forming!
Community Forums - typically held on announced Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in our Fellowship Hall, speakers have included both members and guests from the community who are leaders in their fields of expertise. Topics have ranged from Art and Ancient Spirituality to hearing from the Presbyterian Public Policy Advocate. Rev. Joanna Adams and Rabbi Hillel Norry of Congregation Shearith Israel have partnered for a Rabbi & Reverend series on the books of Ruth and Job. We welcomed authors Deborah Lipstadt and Hamilton Jordan in 2007, and have been honored to have freelance writer and commentator Sandra Mackey and family counselor Peter Gorday lead discussions. Information on any upcoming scheduled Community Forum will be found on our Upcoming Events page.
New Member Classes - are offered at 9:45 a.m. on select Sundays in our Parlor, where Elders share insights about life at Morningside and Pastor Joanna Adams leads discussions about faith and commitment. New members (and anyone interested in joining the church) are then invited to an informal gathering where we spend time talking about what it means to be Presbyterian and how we are called to follow the way of Christ in the world today. Details and further information about the next New Member class can be found here.
