THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Gracious God, we confess that we do not always seek your wisdom before we act. We answer minor slights and obstacles with violent thought. We contemplate vengeance rather than pursue understanding of our neighbors. Our friendships wane because we are unwilling to let go of past wrongs. Opportunities for growth pass us because of our prejudices. Grant us courage to seek peace in our hearts before seeking peace in our communities and in our nation. Grant us understanding of ourselves that we might better understand one another. Lord give us wisdom to discern what is right and the humility to admit when we have chosen wrong. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE  (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  (Hymn 366)

O grant that nothing in my soul may dwell, but thy pure love alone; O may thy love possess me whole, my joy, my treasure, and my crown! All coldness from my heart remove; may every act, word, thought be love.

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
