*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness, come into his presence with singing.

People: Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his, we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Leader: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name.

People: For the Lord is good, his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Leader: Let us worship God, our creator, redeemer, and sustainer. Amen. - Psalm 100

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 455  All Creatures of our God and King  LASST UNS ERFREUEN

verses 1-4

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, from before the foundation of the world, you chose us to be holy and blameless. We confess that sometimes such a calling is difficult to bear. We struggle with what it means to be holy. We know that we are not blameless. Such a calling seems to be perfection, and we are well aware of our limits and failings. It is tempting to turn aside from being chosen. And yet, you never turn aside from us. You continue working within us to make us holy. You, who were blameless, took on the sin of the world that we might come once more into your loving embrace. And so, as your forgiven, loved and useful servants, we offer all thanks and praise to the one who has loved us, our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we make these and all of our prayers, Amen.

A MOMENT OF CONTEMPLATION  Pie Jesu (from Requiem)  Andrew Lloyd Webber

Megan Mashburn and Shannan O’Dowd, sopranos

Elizabeth Alvarez, Michele Voltz, Julie Rosseter Sweeney, and Elisabeth Copeland, string quartet

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest.

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself, and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

People: Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Leader: Believe the Promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - Philippians 2:5-11

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  (Hymn 455)

And everyone of tender heart, forgiving others, take your part. O sing ye! Alleluia! Ye who long pain and sorrow bear, praise God and cast on God your care! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE ANTHEM  Cantique de Jean Racine  Gabriel Fauré

O Word, equal to God, the Almighty, our only hope, eternal day of the earth and heavens; we break the silence of the peaceful night. Divine savior, cast your eyes upon us! Spread the fire of your powerful grace upon us, so that all hell may flee at the sound of your voice; dissipate the sleep of a languishing soul who has forgotten your laws! O Christ, be favorable to these faithful people now gathered to bless you. Receive the songs they offer to your immortal glory, and may they return filled with your gifts.

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
