11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Ms. Eliza Smith

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Partita on “Ascended Triumph”- Theme  Robert Hobby

Rev. Dr. Jonathan Crutchfield, organist

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Our hearts are steadfast, O Lord, our hearts are steadfast; we will sing and make melody.

People: Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn.

Leader: We will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples, and we will sing praises to you among the nations.

People: Your steadfast love is higher than the heavens, and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

Leader: Let us worship God, our maker, redeemer and sustainer. Amen. -Psalm 108:1-4

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 423  Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun  DUKE STREET

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, you have called us into a way of living that is transformed, but we have not lived up to our calling. You have shown us your way for our lives – a way marked by newness of heart and spirit, but we cling to what we know. In Jesus Christ, you swept away the boundaries of sin and brokenness and invited us into fellowship. We have resolutely set our minds and our hands to rebuilding those barriers. We believe our own righteousness to be sufficient and the sin of others to be insurmountable. We have not lived as though your grace is sufficient for all our needs. So forgive us, we pray. Forgive us, and bring us to that place of childlike love and friendship to which you have called us. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness.

People: And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient, to the point of death – even death on a cross.

Leader: Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave him the name that is above every name,

People: So that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. -Philippians 2:6-11

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  (Hymn 263)

Thou reignest in glory, thou rulest in light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all praise we would render; O help us to see ’tis only the splendor of light hideth thee!

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
