People: Lift up your hands to the holy place, and bless the Lord.

Leader: May the Lord, maker of heaven and earth, bless you from Zion.

People: We have come to worship God, creator, redeemer and sustainer, Amen. -Psalm 134

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 461  God is Here!  ABBOT’S LEIGH

Verses 1, 2, and 3

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of love, you made us for love. You reached to us from across the abyss of our sin to make known to us the depth of your love for us. And yet, despite knowing this, we live as though you did not love us. We live as though we were not created for love. We sin, and our hearts are not right within us. Forgive us, we pray, turn our hearts and change us into the loving disciples you call us to be. We pray this in the name of love incarnate, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation. The old has passed away; the new has come.

People: All this is from God, who reconciled himself to us through Christ and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.

Leader: That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. Believe the Promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! -2 Corinthians 5:17-19

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 461)

Lord of all, of church and kingdom, in an age of change and doubt keep us faithful to the gospel, help us work your purpose out. Here, in this day’s dedication, all we have to give, receive: we, who cannot live without you, we adore you! We believe!

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE ANTHEM  O Love, How Deep  Everett Titcomb

O love, how deep, how broad, how high, how passing thought and fantasy, that God, the Son of God, should take our mortal form for mortals’ sake. For us he prayed, for us he taught, for us his daily works he wrought, by words and signs and actions, thus still seeking not himself, but us. All glory to our Lord and God for love so deep, so high, so broad; the Trinity whom we adore for ever and for evermore. Amen. (text: 15th century)

THE EPISTLE LESSON  1 Corinthians 8:1-13  (page 160 in the pew Bible, OT)

*THE HYMN 335  Though I May Speak  O WALY WALY

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
