THE GATHERING  Eliza Smith

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Built on the Rock  Paul Manz

*THE CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP  All My Hope on God is Founded  Herbert Howells

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN  All People That on Earth Do Dwell  OLD HUNDREDTH

Verses 1 - 3, Congregation and choir; verse 4 - choir only; verse 5 - Congregation and choir

5. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the God whom heaven and earth adore, from all and from the angel host be praise and glory evermore. Amen.

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, though we are made in your image, we fail to live as you made us to live. Where we have missed opportunities to serve, we need forgiveness. Where we have been unkind, we need forgiveness. Where we have caused pain, we need forgiveness. Where we harbor guilt and unease, we need forgiveness. For what we know but cannot name, we need forgiveness. So remake us, we pray. Call us and lead us where you would have us go. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing: it is the gift of God - not the result of works, so that no one might boast.

People: For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.

Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. -Ephesians 2:8-10

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  Hymn 161

Let all who seek you then rejoice, and sing to you with joyful voice. For you shall bless the righteous, Lord. Forever be your name adored.

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST LESSON  Matthew 22:34-46  (page 24 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM  Ein Feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80 - MVT. 1  J.S. Bach

A mighty fortress is our God, a stronghold never failing. God helps us when with troubles fraught and freely grants his caring. The evil enemy attacks us with glee; his weapons are cruel, his treachery would rule, on earth is none beside him.

THE SECOND LESSON  Deuteronomy 34:1-12  (page 184 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE SERMON  “A Prophet Like Moses”  Baron Mullis

THE SOLO  Komm in mein Herzenshaus — Mvt. 4  J.S. Bach

Megan Mashburn, soprano

Come and abide with me, Lord Jesus, my desiring. From world and sin make free, your likeness shine within me, send renewing! Leave, scornful sin, from me! Come and abide with me, Lord Jesus, my desiring.

*EXCERPTED FROM...  Mardee Rightmyer

People: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

Leader: What does this mean?

People: I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that God has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my limbs, my reason, and all my senses, and still preserves them; in addition thereto, clothing and shoes, meat and drink, house and homestead, wife and children, fields, cattle, and all my goods; that God provides me richly and daily with all that I need to support this body and life, protects me from all danger, and guards me and preserves me from all evil; and all this out of pure, fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me; for all which I owe it to God to thank, praise, serve, and obey God. This is most certainly true.

THE PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY  The Gift of Grace  arr. Arnold Sherman

Morningside Handbell Choir (Jeff Peters, director)

James Zellers, flute

*THE OFFERING OF PLEDGES  Hymn 422

(You are invited to bring your pledge card forward and make your commitment during the singing of the hymn.)

1. God, whose giving knows no ending, from your rich and endless store, nature’s wonder, Jesus’ wisdom, costly cross, grave’s shattered door: Gifted by you, we turn to you, offering up ourselves in praise; thankful song shall rise forever, gracious donor of our days.

2. Skills and time are ours for pressing toward the goals of Christ, your son. All at peace in health and freedom, races joined, the church made one. Now direct our daily labor, lest we strive for self alone; born with talents, make us servants fit to answer at your throne.

3. Treasure too you have entrusted, gain through powers your grace conferred; ours to use for home and kindred, and to spread the gospel word. Open wide our hands, in sharing, as we heed Christ’s ageless call, healing, teaching, and reclaiming, serving you by loving all.

*THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION  OLD HUNDREDTH

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia!

*THE HYMN 260  A Mighty Fortress Is Our God  EIN’ FESTE BURG

*THE CHORAL RESPONSE  Das Wort sie sollen lassen stahn — Mvt. 8  J.S. Bach

The word of God no foe can harm not even know its merit. God guides us with his mighty arm, with weapons of the spirit. And if they take our house, life, fame, child and spouse, let all these things go; no gain it brings the foe, the kingdom is ours forever!

*THE POSTLUDE  A Mighty Fortress is Our God  Paul Manz
