WORSHIP SEPTEMBER 17 2017
11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Eliza Smith

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Petit Prelude  Joseph Jongen

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.

People: Sing to the Lord, bless God’s name; tell of God’s salvation from day to day.

Leader: Declare God’s glory among the nations, God’s marvelous works among all the peoples.

People: For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; God is to be revered above all Gods. For all the gods of the people are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.

Leader: Let us worship God, who creates, redeems and sustains us. Amen. -Psalm 96:1-5

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 132  Come, Great God of All the Ages  ABBOT’S LEIGH

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God, yet again we acknowledge our sinfulness. Though you have made us for love, we have not loved. Though you have made us for community, we have broken the good fellowship you would give us. Though you have made us to be human, we have not lived up to our holy calling. We have been less than you would have us be. Forgive us, we pray. Remind us always of the high expectations you have for us and the even higher love with which you redeem us to fulfill expectations. We pray in the name of Jesus who loves us, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing: it is the gift of God - not the result of works, so that no one might boast.

People: For we are what God has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before hand to be our way of life.

Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. -Ephesians 2:8-10

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  Hymn 85

To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing, To God and to the Lamb I will sing: To God and to the Lamb who is the great I Am, while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing; while millions join the theme, I will sing!

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

THE BAPTISMAL RESPONSE  Child of Blessing, Child of Promise  KINGDOM

THE EPISTLE LESSON  Romans 14:1-12  (page 152 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM  Hark, I Hear the Harp’s Eternal  arr. Alice Parker

Hark, I hear the harp’s eternal ringing on the farther shore, as I near those swollen waters, with their deep and solemn roar. Hallelujah, praise the Lamb, glory to the great I AM. And my soul though stained with sorrow, fading as the light of day, passes swiftly o’er those waters to the city far away. Refrain. Souls have crossed before me, saintly, to that land of perfect rest; and I hear them singing faintly in the mansions of the blest. Refrain.

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON  Genesis 50:15-21  (page 46 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE SERMON  “The Importance of Speaking Kindly”  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN 298  There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy  IN BABILONE

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
