WORSHIP AUGUST 27 2017
11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Mardee Rightmyer

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Chorale Prelude: Nun priest alle  Healey Willan

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and those who live in it; for the Lord has founded it on the seas and established it on the rivers.

People: Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord and who shall stand in the Lord’s holy place?

Leader: Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not give up their souls to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully.

People: They will receive blessings from the Lord, and vindication from the God of their salvation.

Leader: Such is the company of those who seek the Lord, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Let us worship God: Father, Son and Holy Ghost. -Psalm 24:1-6

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 268  God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens  HOLY MANNA

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, creator of the winds and rains, sun and moon, the earth and all that is in it, too often we utter your praises without pausing to consider what it is we sing. Too often, our words bear no evidence that we bear the imprint of your Word. Too often, we mumble our joy, suppress our sorrow and live as though you do not matter. Forgive us, we pray, for our meaningless attempts to domesticate your transcendence. Break through into our hearts and lives and minds, and transform us by your power. Through Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: I appeal to you, therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

People: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God – what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! -Romans 12:1-2

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 274)

Your word commands response and summons us to life. We follow, strengthened by your grace, in calm or strife. Our ever present help, our challenge and our prod, we praise you now and to life’s end, Eternal God.

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

O Lord most holy, O Lord most mighty, O loving Father, thee would we be praising always. Help us to know thee and love thee; Father, grant us thy truth and grace; guide and defend us. Rule thou our willful hearts, keep thine our wandering thoughts; in all our sorrow, let us find our rest in thee. And in temptation's hour, save through thy mighty power, thine aid O send us; hear us in mercy. Show us thy favor, so shall we live, and sing praise to thee. (Text: St. Thomas Aquinas)

THE SECOND LESSON  Exodus 1:17-20  (page 47 in the pew Bible, OT)

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
