WORSHIP JULY 16 2017
10 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Mardee Rightmyer

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Prelude on RHUDDLAN  Raymond H. Haan

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Your word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our paths.

People: We desire to live as you would live - with righteousness and joy.

Leader: Even when we are afflicted, we find life in you.

People: Accept our offering of praise, O Lord, teach us your ordinances.

Leader: Our lives rest lightly in our hands.

People: Our future lies in your truth and peace.

Leader: Your decrees are our heritage. Your will the joy of our hearts. People: Incline our hearts to perform your statutes always. Turn our lips to praise you forever. Amen. -Psalm 119:105-112

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 356  Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing  NETTLETON

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God, Giver of Life, Bestower of Grace, and Advocate for Mercy, your giving knows no ending. And yet, we turn from knowing the extent of your love for us. You spread seeds of faith everywhere but we only appreciate the most obvious and respond only to the most grand gestures. Help us to recognize and to learn from all the seeds you sow. Show us how to tend to the thorny issues and the rocky paths we encounter in our life together. Make us gardeners of grace and listeners for love. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: “You will indeed listen, but never understand, and you will indeed look but never perceive.”

People: Our hearts have grown dull, our ears weak, our eyes semi-closed, but our desire to heal stays strong.

Leader: Jesus tells us “turn and I will heal them.” Friends, hear the good news of the gospel.

People: In Christ, we are forgiven, loved and free. Hallelujah. Amen.

-Matthew 13:18-23

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  (Hymn 572)

There is a place of quiet rest, near to the heart of God. A place where sin cannot molest, near to the heart of God. O Jesus, blest redeemer, sent from the heart of God, hold us, who wait before thee, near to the heart of God.

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE FIRST SCRIPTURE  Romans 8:1-11  (page 147 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM  “The Heavens are Telling” (from “Creation”)  Franz Joseph Haydn

Nan Nowell, alto; John Young, tenor; Brandon Odom, baritone

The heavens are telling the glory of God. The wonder of his work displays the firmament. The day that is coming speaks to the day; the night that is gone to following night. In all the lands resounds the word, never unperceived, ever understood.

THE SECOND SCRIPTURE  Matthew 13:1-16  (page 13 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  “Harrowing Grace”  Beth Waltemath

*THE HYMN 422  God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending  BEACH SPRING

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
