WORSHIP JUNE 11 2017
11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Beth Waltemath

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  “Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty”  Johann Walther

Michael Morgan, guest organist

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your mighty name;

People: To declare God’s steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night;

Leader: To play music of the lute and harp, and to praise you with the melody of the lyre;

People: For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands, I sing for joy.

Leader: Let us worship the Triune God: Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. - Psalm 92:1-4

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 263  Immortal Invisible God Only Wise  ST. DENIO

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God, Blessed Redeemer, Spirit Divine: this is your world, and we are your people. Come among us, we pray, to save us from ourselves. We confess that deep divides crisscross your creation. We see the suffering of others, but neglect to go to their aid. We misuse natural and human resources, putting them to selfish and fleeting ends. We hear the good news of your love, but fail to be that good news in the world. Forgive us, merciful God. Bind up the broken places of our hearts and in this world, that we may live as one beloved community. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us?

People: Who will bring any charge against God's beloved? It is God who justifies.

Leader: Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or peril, or sword?

People: No. In all these things we are more than conquerors. For we are convinced that neither death nor life, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God.

Leader: Believe the Good News:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, and restored to new life.

(adapted from Romans 8:31-39)

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 139)

To Thee, Great One in Three: eternal praises be hence evermore. Thy sov’reign majesty may we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore.

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

THE MINUTE MESSAGE  David Mogge

THE FIRST SCRIPTURE  1 John 4:7-12  (page 226 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM  Brother James’s Air  arr. Gordon Jacob

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want, he makes me down to lie in pastures green, he leadeth me the quiet waters by. My soul he doth restore again and me to walk doth make within the paths of blessedness, e’en for his own name’s sake. Yea, though I pass through shadowed vale, yet will I fear no ill; for thou art with me, and thy rod and staff me comfort still. My table thou hast furnished in presence of my foes; my head with oil thou dost anoint, and my cup overflows. Goodness and mercy all my days will surely follow me; and in my maker’s heart always my dwelling place shall be. (text: Psalm 23)

THE SECOND SCRIPTURE  2 Corinthians 13:11-13  (page 175 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  “A Loving and Beloved Community”  Aaron Pratt Shepherd

*THE HYMN 353  Great God Your Love Has Called Us Here  DAS NEUGEBORNE KINDELEIN

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
