WORSHIP MAY 21 2017
11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Anna Miles

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Partita on “Simple Gifts” - Introduction  Noel Goemanne

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Bless our God, O peoples, let the sound of praise be heard.

People: God has kept us among the living and not let our feet slip.

Leader: We have been enclosed by trials, weighed down by burdens.

People: But you have brought us out into a spacious place.

Leader: Blessed be God, for hearing our prayers.

People: Blessed be God, for never wavering in steadfast love. Amen. - Psalm 66

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 376  Love Divine, All Loves Excelling  HYFRYDOL

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Ever-present, ever-loving God, we have been hiding from you. You call us to keep your commandments. But we are anxious and afraid. We do not love our neighbors as ourselves, nor do we forgive our enemies. You promise to send your Spirit of truth and yet we do not receive it. We would rather choose comforting words than truthful ones. We’d rather perform safe actions than loving ones. Help us, O God, to be faithful in our love and truthful in our words and deeds as we respond to your love for us. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: “Now who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good?”

People: Even if we suffer for doing what is right, we are blessed.

Leader: For it is better to suffer for what is good, than what is evil.

People: Christ suffered for sins once and for all and brings us all to God.

Leader: Friends, hear the good news of the gospel of our Lord Jesus the Christ.

People: In Christ, we are forgiven, loved and free. Amen. - 1 Peter 3:13-14, 18

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 276)

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed thy hand hath provided; great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

THE 4TH GRADE BIBLE PRESENTATIONS

THE GOSPEL LESSON  John 14:15-21  (page 103 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM  King of Glory, King of Peace  Eric H. Thiman

King of glory, King of peace, I will love thee; and, that love may never cease, I will move thee. Thou hast granted my request, thou hast heard me: thou didst note my working breast, thou hast spared me. Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing thee, and the cream of all my heart I will bring thee. Though my sins against me cried, thou didst clear me, and alone, when they replied, thou didst hear me. Seven whole days, not one in seven, I will praise thee; in my heart, though not in heaven, I can raise thee. Small it is, in this poor sort to enrol thee; E’en eternity’s too short to extol thee. Amen. (Text: George Herbert)

THE GOSPEL LESSON  Acts 17:12-30  (page 129 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  The Soapbox Preacher  Beth Waltemath

*THE HYMN 367  Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love  CHEREPONI

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
