WORSHIP MAY 14 2017
11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Sarah Are

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  An Easter Alleluya - part 1  Gordon Slater

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul!

People: I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long.

Leader: Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them.

People: Who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry.

Leader: The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous.

People: The Lord watches over the strangers; God upholds the orphan and the widow but the way of the wicked God brings to ruin.

Leader: Let us worship God who creates us, sustains us and redeems us. - Psalm 146: 1-2; 5-9

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 306  Fairest, Lord Jesus  CRUSADERS’ HYMN

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God, we know that we may rest in the promises of our baptism – we know that your grace rests on us this day and every day. Never for a moment are we outside of your constant care. And yet, things happen. Life tumbles in and your promises seem distant. We retreat into fear. We worry about what we cannot change. Forgive our anxious fears. Lead us to be the people you created us to be, and set us once more on the path of discipleship. We ask all these things through Jesus Christ, in whose name we name our prayers, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

People: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

Leader: When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Colossians 3:1-4

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 341)

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his spirit, washed in his blood. This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

THE GOSPEL LESSON  Luke 24:13-27  (page 84 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM  In Thee is Gladness  arr. Henry Ley

In thee is gladness, amid all sadness, Jesus, sunshine of my heart! By thee are given the gifts of heaven, thou the true redeemer art! Our souls thou wakest, our bonds thou breakest who trust thee surely hath built securely, he stands for ever, Hallelujah! Our hearts are pining to see thy shining, dying or living to thee are cleaving, nought can us sever, Hallelujah! If he is ours we fear no powers, nor of earth, nor sin, nor death; he sees and blesses in worst distresses, he can change them with a breath. Wherefore the story tells of his glory, with heart and voices all heaven rejoices in him for ever, Hallelujah! We shout for gladness triumph o’er sadness love thee and praise thee and still shall raise thee glad hymns for ever, Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

THE GOSPEL LESSON  Luke 24:28-35  (page 85 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  “On the Road Again”  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN  Lord of all Hopefulness, Lord of all Joy  SLANE

1. Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy, be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

2. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, be there at our labors, and give us, we pray, your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

3. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

4. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
