11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Beth Waltemath

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Crown Him with Many Crowns/Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee  arr. Carol McMillen

Derek Matthew, piano

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Our hearts are steadfast, O Lord, our hearts are steadfast; we will sing and make melody.

People: Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn.

Leader: We will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples, and we will sing praises to you among the nations.

People: Your steadfast love is higher than the heavens, and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

Leader: Let us worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer. Amen. - Psalm 108: 1-4

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 482  Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty  LOBE DEN HERREN

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, in quiet moments of honest self-reflection, we entertain doubts and fears that we would rather not allow to see the light of day. Our doubts themselves cause us to be afraid. Do you still love us if we cannot bring ourselves to believe some days? Are we still Christians if the creeds don’t ring true all the time? Are we still forgiven and redeemed when forgiveness and redemption seem like empty promises? Our struggles frighten us. Yet struggle is nothing new to you. You have shared our doubts and fears and know what it is to question and be afraid. So help us to trust and remember that it is from you, and you alone, that our help comes. We ask all these things in Jesus’ name, and for his. Amen.

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way.

People: So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away, see, everything had become new.

Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! -2 Corinthians 5: 1-17

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 76)

Christ came from heaven’s throne salvation to bestow, but people scorned and none the longed-for Christ would know. But O my friend, my friend indeed, who at my need his life did spend!

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

UPDATE FROM APNC  Betsy Holland

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

People: With joy and thanksgiving we welcome this child into Christ’s church. We are the family of God for we are all one in Christ.

THE BAPTISMAL RESPONSE  Child of Blessing, Child of Promise  KINGDOM

THE EPISTLE LESSON  Romans 4:1-5;13-17 (page 144 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM  Greater Love Hath no Man  John Ireland

Megan Mashburn, soprano; Antoine Griggs, baritone

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. Love is strong as death. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Who, his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness. You are washed, you are sanctified, you are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus. You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, that you should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

THE SECOND LESSON  Psalm 121 (page 539 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE SERMON  “From Where Will My Help Come?”  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN 234  I to the Hills Will Lift My Eyes  DUNDEE

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
