People: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for ours is the kingdom of heaven.

Leader: Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted.

People: Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth.

Leader: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for we will be filled.

People: Blessed are the merciful for we will be shown mercy.

Leader: Rejoice and be glad, for great is the kingdom of heaven.

People: Praise be to God, ruler of heaven and earth. Amen. -Matthew 5:1-12

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 455  All Creatures of Our God and King  LASST UNS ERFREUEN

Verses 1, 2, 4 and 6

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Lord, you search us and know us. You greet us when we awake and bless us when we retire for the day. You search our thoughts, discern our paths, and know our ways even when they are mysterious to us. Your knowledge is too won-derful for us; we want to hide from it. We want to avoid the depth of your calling to us. We want to place boundaries on our service to others. But wherever we go, you are there. Cure the fear that makes us flee. Cradle the love inside us that assures us of your merciful presence and abiding grace. Amen -Psalm 139: 1-8

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.

People: In God, all things are made in love. Darkness and light surround us in comfort and in wisdom and lead us in the path of grace.

Leader: Friends, hear the good news of the Gospel.

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved and free. Amen. -Psalm 139: 11-12

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 455)

And everyone of tender heart, forgiving others, take your part. O sing ye! Alleluia! Ye who long pain and sorrow bear, praise God and cast on God your care! Alleluia! Allelu-ia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

“Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.”

-Martin Luther King Jr.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE GOSPEL LESSON  Matthew 5:1-12  (page 4 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM  Psalm 139  Allen Pote

Lord, you have searched me and known me, you know everything I do. When I rise and lie down, you are with me through and through. Before a word is on my tongue, you know what I will say, your presence follows me day by day. Where can I flee from your spirit? Where can I go to run away? If I go to heaven, or live in hell, you are there. Search me, O God, and know me, try me and know my heart. See if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Amen.

THE PSALTER LESSON  Psalm 136: 1-12, 23-24  (page 543 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE SERMON  “How Deep Are You Prepared to Go”  Rev. Dr. Paul Smith

*THE HYMN 363  I Want Jesus to Walk with Me  SOJOURNER

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED  Baron Mullis

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
