WORSHIP JANUARY 22 2017
11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Baron Mullis

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Chaconne  Louis Couperin

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Praise the Lord! Happy are those who fear the Lord, who greatly delight in his commandments.

People: Their descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.

Leader: They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright; they are gracious, merciful, and righteous.

People: It is well with those who deal generously and lend, who conduct their affairs with justice.

Leader: For the righteous will never be moved; they will be remembered forever.

People: They are not afraid of evil tidings; their hearts are firm, secure in the Lord.

Leader: Their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.

People: They have distributed freely, they have given to the poor; their righteousness endures forever; their horn is exalted in honor.

Leader: Praise the Lord! All honor and glory belong to the Lord our God. -Psalm 112:1-9

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 265  Great God, We Sing That Mighty Hand  WAREHAM

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

In the beginning of time, the earth was formless and void, and darkness covered the face of the deep, and then, you spoke: Let there be light. And stars, and seas, and earth. And us… And you said, “It is good.” Forgive us when we do not see the good in each of us. Forgive us when we do not speak the truth. Send us spirit, O God, that we, too, might speak: Truth. Peace. Grace. Mercy. Freedom. Love. Fill our silence with your Word. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place. Love lets you believe in the truth that sets you free. “Love bears all things. Believes all things. Hopes all things. Endures all things. Love never ends.”

People: By the love of God in Jesus Christ, we are a new creation.

Leader: Believe the promise of the gospel.

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved and free. Amen.

- 1 Corinthians 13: 7-8

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  You Are a Light on the Hill, O People

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

People: With joy and thanksgiving we welcome this child into Christ’s church.

We are the family of God for we are all one in Christ.

THE BAPTISMAL RESPONSE  Baptized in Water  BUNESSAN

THE FIRST LESSON  Isaiah 45: 1-19 (page 634 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM  He Comes to Us  Jane Marshall

He comes to us as One unknown, without a name, as of old, by the lakeside he came to all those who knew him not. He speaks to us, he speaks the same word: “Follow thou me!” and sets us to the tasks which he has to fulfill for our time. He commands. And to those who obey him, whether they be wise or simple, he will reveal himself in the toils, the conflicts, the sufferings which they shall pass through in his fellowship, and, as an ineffable mystery, they shall learn in their own experience who he is. O Morning Star, how fair and bright thou beamest forth in truth and light! O sovereign meek and lowly, thou Root of Jesse, David’s Son, my Lord and Master, thou hast won my heart to serve thee solely. Thou are holy, fair and glorious, all victorious, rich in blessing, praise and thanks to our eternal king.

(text: Albert Schweitzer; Philip Nicolai)

THE GOSPEL LESSON  Matthew 5:13-20 (page 4 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  “To Make Brighter”  Beth Waltemath

*THE HYMN 358  Help Us Accept Each Other  BARONITA

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
