WORSHIP JANUARY 15 2017
11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Anna Miles

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing  arr. Emma Lou Diemer

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High;

People: To declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night.

Leader: To the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre.

People: For you O Lord have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I will sing for joy.

Leader: Come, let us sing for joy. Let us worship God, who has created, redeemed and sustained us. Amen. -Psalm 92

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN  O Sing a New Song to the Lord  DUKE STREET

O sing a new song to the Lord, sing, all the earth and bless that name; from day to day God’s praise record, the Lord’s redeeming grace proclaim.

Tell all the world God’s wondrous ways; tell heathen nations far and near; great is the Lord, and great God’s praise; the Lord alone let nations fear.

The heathen gods are idols vain; the shining heav’ns the Lord supports; both light and honor lead the train, while strength and beauty fill the courts.

Let every tongue and every tribe give to the Lord due praise and sing; all glory unto God ascribe, come, throng the courts, and off’rings bring.

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, from ancient times you have sent your servants to declare good news. Your prophets have given a message of good news to the poor, release to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind and freedom to the oppressed. In the person of Jesus Christ, you came among us proclaiming the good news. We did not hear you. Rarely do utterances of good news pass our lips. Our attention is turned to ourselves. There is no malice in us, O Lord. There is no deliberateness to our failure to share his proclamation… we simply have other things on our minds. Forgive us, gracious God, when we miss the point. Forgive us when our lives get in the way of what you would have us do. Renew us in your service and keep us always in your care, even as you always have. We pray this through our Lord Jesus Christ, and for his sake. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE  (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing: it is the gift of God - not the result of works, so that no one might boast.

People: For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before hand to be our way of life.

Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Ephesians 2:8-10

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 430)

Come sing, O church, in joy! Come join, O church, in song! For Christ the Lord has triumphed o’er the ages long! In bold accord, come celebrate the journey now and praise the Lord!

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
