WORSHIP SEPTEMBER 25 2016
11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  John Blevins

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Toccata in E Minor  Johann Pachelbel

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

People: O Lord, you are our refuge and our fortress. In you, our God, we trust.

Leader: In God’s nest, you shall be covered by feathers, protected beneath God’s wings.

People: God’s faithfulness is our shield and rampart.

Leader: Do not fear terror, injury, or illness, for God’s love strengthens us and stays with us even at our most vulnerable.

People: God is with us in our trouble; God is present day and night.

Leader: The sanctuary of God is all around you. Come, let us worship God whose love is ever-present. –Based on Psalm 91: 1-6, 14-16

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 414  As Those of Old Their Firstfruits Brought  FOREST GREEN

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful God, you made humankind in your image; blessed all beings with your goodness. We have all known what it is like to feel invisible because of our age, our status, our gender, our sexuality, our disability or our race. Help us to see all people as real. Show us the realities that we might ignore, of those who live far outside our gates and of those who live inside our homes. Let us call ourselves citizens not consumers, children not constituents, loved ones not lost causes. Embrace us, O God, in your mercy. Show us how we are beloved and how we belong to one another. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Those who belong to Christ Jesus will not be condemned. The Spirit gives life in Christ Jesus. The law of the Spirit has set you free from the law of sin and death.

People: For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. -Romans 8:1, 39

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  Hymn 303

Plenteous grace with thee is found, Grace to cover all my sin; let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art, freely let me take of thee; spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity.

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

I will lift mine eyes to the hills. From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord the maker of heaven and earth, he will not let your foot be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper, the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not harm you by day nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this day forth forever more. (Psalm 121)

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
