Verses 1 through 4

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, we know that we are your creation; made in your image; called to reflect your goodness. We know that in Jesus Christ, you have redeemed our brokenness and renewed our spirits. And yet, we know also that we are plagued by nagging doubts; perplexed by trying circumstances. We know that despite our best efforts, and sometimes due to our worst efforts, we have sinned. We know that sin cuts us off from the holy relationship we might have with you. We know that sin strips us of joy and leaves us with nothing. We know all these things, but we cannot save ourselves. So we ask your forgiveness and mercy. Bring us back into right relationship with you that we may witness to joy, for the sake of our crucified and risen Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: When the fullness of time had come, God sent the Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children.

People: And because you are God’s children, God has sent the Spirit of the Son unto our hearts, crying. “Abba, Father!”

Leader: So you are no longer a slave, but a child, and if a child, then also an heir, through God. Believe the Promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! -Galatians 4:4-7

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  Hymn 455

All creatures, your Creator bless, and worship God in humbleness. O sing ye! Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, and praise the Spirit, Three in One! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON  Jeremiah 8:18-9:1  (page 667 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM  Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing  arr. Lloyd Pfautsch

Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace; streams of mercy, never ceas-ing, call for songs of loudest praise. I am bound for the kingdom, will you go to glory with me? Hallelujah, praise the Lord. Oh! to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be! Let that grace, Lord, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee. (Refrain) Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here’s my heart, Lord, take and seal it from thy courts above. (Refrain) (text: Robert Robinson 1735-1790)

THE GOSPEL LESSON  Luke 16:1-13  (page 74 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  “How Much Do You Owe?”  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN 399  We Walk by Faith and Not by Sight  DUNLAP’S CREEK

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
