THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God, we have faith you are at work for good in the world, though we con-fess at times it’s hard to see you. We have faith your love for us has no limits, though we confess at times we question that love. We know you are a God who cares for the suffering and the poor, though we confess we often do not show con-cern for those who are hurting or with whom we disagree. Thank you for continu-ing to walk with us even when sin keeps us from seeing you. Open our eyes to your presence, open our hearts to receive your healing grace, open our minds to empathize with others and open our hands to share your mercies with all. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: You know that you were ransomed, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.

People: Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart.

Leader: You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. Believe the good news of the gospel…

People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen. -Adapted from 1 Peter 1: 17-23

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  Hymn 576

Gloria, gloria, in excelsis Deo. Gloria, gloria, alleluia, alleluia.

Gloria, gloria, in excelsis Deo. Gloria, gloria, alleluia, alleluia.

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!

People: And also with you.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE OLD TESTAMENT  Psalm 116: 1-4, 12-19 (page 533 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM  Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise  Eric H. Thiman

Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious the ancient of days, almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy Justice like mountains high soaring above thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. To all, life thou givest to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, and wither and perish but nought changeth thee. Great father of glory, pure father of light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render: O help us to see ’tis only the splendor of light hideth thee. Amen. (text: W. C. Smith)

THE GOSPEL LESSON  Luke 24:13-35 (page 84 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  “The Quick of Heart”  Drew Stockstill

*THE HYMN 363  I Want Jesus to Walk with Me  SOJOURNER

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead, I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
