THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of boundless compassion, you know what kind of people we are. We can judge so harshly. We can let relationships slip into silence. We can gossip and exclude. We can fail to see our own sin. We look with suspicion and fear, and neglect to show hospitality to strangers. We treasure things that are worthless and squander your precious gifts. But you pour out grace upon grace. You forgive our sins even while we are judging others for theirs. We thank you for your grace and we pray you strengthen us to show compassion to others and enable us to truly receive the forgiveness you grant us all. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me!

People: The life we now live in the flesh we live by faith in the Son of God who loves us and gives himself for us.

Leader: Hear the Good news!

People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. -Galatians 2

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead, I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY  Inscription of Hope  Russian folk tune; arr. Z. Randall Stroope

I believe in the sun, even when it is not shining. And I believe in love, even when there’s no one there. And I believe in God, even when He is silent. I believe through any trial, there is always a way. But sometimes, in this suffering and hopeless despair, my heart cries for shelter, to know someone’s there. But a voice rises within me, saying, “Hold on, my child, I’ll give you strength, I’ll give you hope. Just stay a little while.” May there someday be sunshine, may there someday be happiness, may there someday be love, may there someday be peace. (Anonymous text inscribed on a wall in Germany where Jews were hiding)
