WORSHIP APRIL 24 2016
11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Drew Stockstill

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  “Andante Tranquillo”  Michael Burkhardt

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul!

People: I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long.

Leader: Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them.

People: Who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry.

Leader: The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous.

People: The Lord watches over the strangers; God upholds the orphan and the widow but the way of the wicked God brings to ruin.

Leader: Let us worship God who creates us, sustains us and redeems us. - Psalm 146:1-2;5-9

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN (See Insert)  Psalm 148  LAUDA ANIMA

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, we know that we have fallen short of your calling for us. We know that you have offered us life abundant and we have settled for life parsimonious. You have offered us the fellowship and communion of the Holy Spirit and we have preferred our own ways of being community. You have given us the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and we have preferred instead what we could contain, a harsh and cold grace that we can administer. Forgive us, we pray for our limits. Remind us once more of what is exceedingly abundantly more than we could ever ask or imagine, and then lead us there. Through our Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: “For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:

People: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’

Leader: For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.” Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. -1 Corinthians 1:18-19;25

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 341)

This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS

THE FIRST READING  Revelation 21:1-6  (page 244 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM  And I Saw a New Heaven  Edgar L. Bainton

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; For the first heaven and the first earth were passed away, and there was no more sea. And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with all, and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them and [shall] be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, for the former things have passed away. (Revelation 21:1-4)

THE SECOND READING  Acts 11:1-18  (page 122 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  The Defense Rests  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN 450  O Day of Peace  JERUSALEM

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
