THE GATHERING  Anna Miles

Leader: The Lord be with you.

THE PRELUDE  My Song is Love Unknown  Michael Burkhardt

Jonathan Crutchfield, Organist/Choirmaster

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us.

People: That your way may be known upon the earth, your saving power among the nations.

Leader: Let the peoples praise you, O God, let all the peoples praise you.

People: Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon the earth.

Leader: Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.

People: The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, has blessed us. May God continue to bless us; let all the ends of the earth revere him!

Leader: Let us worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer. Amen. - Psalm 67

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 442  The Church’s One Foundation  AURELIA

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, we have sought your blessing upon us, yet even as we ask, we know that we cannot merit it. Our lives stand, not as testimony to your goodness, but as reminders of our sin. We have failed at our calling to be your people and show to the world whom you are. And so, in honesty we come seeking your healing touch upon our lives; your cleansing Word to our sin. Forgive us, we pray, for our failures, and help us live as though we are the recipients of grace upon grace. We ask in the name of Jesus, and for his sake. Amen.

THE KYRIE (Hymn 572)

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE  (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: “For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:

People: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’

Leader: For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.” Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 582)

Dying, You destroyed our death: Rising, You restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory.

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST

(Children ages 3-10 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Threes, fours & fives are in Room 011; K-1st grade in Room 001; 2nd-3rd grade in Room 003; 4th-5th grade in Room 005).

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON  Isaiah 55:1-9  (page 644 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM  Speak, O Lord  arr. John Ferguson

Speak, O Lord, as we come to you to receive the food of your holy word. Take your truth; plant it deep in us; shape and fashion us in your likeness, that the light of Christ might be seen today in our acts of love and our deeds of faith. Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us all your purposes for your glory. Teach us, Lord, full obedience, holy reverence, true humility: test our thoughts and our attitudes in the radiance of your purity. Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to see your majestic love and authority. Words of power that can never fail - let their truth prevail over unbelief. Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds; help us grasp the heights of your plans for us - truths unchanged from the dawn of time that will echo down through eternity. And by grace we’ll stand on your promises, and by faith we’ll walk as you walk with us. Speak, O Lord, ’til your church is built and the earth is filled with your glory.

THE EPISTLE LESSON  1 Corinthians 10:1-13  (page 161 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  The Spiritual Rock  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN 379  My Hope is Built on Nothing Less  SOLID ROCK

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED  Drew Stockstill

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
