WORSHIP JANUARY 31 2016
11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Sarah Smith

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Prelude on ST. COLUMBA  Harold Friedell

Jonathan Crutchfield, Organist/Choirmaster

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness, come into his presence with singing.

People: Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Leader: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name.

People: For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Leader: Let us worship the eternal God: Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. - Psalm 100

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 376  Love Divine, All Loves Excelling  HYFRYDOL

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of love, you created us to live lives marked by the love with which you made us. But our sin has prevented us from being what you made us to be. Your love for us is so great that you became incarnate that we might know you. Yet we fail to live as messengers of that love. In the failure of our imaginations, we have not loved as you would have us love. So forgive us, we pray. Forgive us and recreate us with your image fresh upon us. Use us to make your love known where you would lead us to be. Through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE  (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness.

People: And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient, to the point of death – even death on a cross.

Leader: Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave him the name that is above every name,

People: so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Philippians 2:6-11

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
