WORSHIP JANUARY 17 2016
11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Sarah Smith

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Oh, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing  Paul Manz

Jonathan Crutchfield, Organist/Choirmaster

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever;

People: with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.

Leader: I declare that your steadfast love is established forever,

People: your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.

Leader: Let us worship God: Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer! - Psalm 89:1-2

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 356  Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing  NETTLETON

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, with our trust in you, we need fear nothing. Yet we live timidly rather than boldly. As your called people, we should be a light to the world. But we choose instead to live unto ourselves. As the recipients of great good news, we should be exuberant in our sharing. Instead we politely discuss it. We have sinned, and we need your forgiveness. Cast out our complacency and replace it with enthusiasm, O God. Call us, empower us, use us, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: What has come into being in Christ was life, and the life was the light of all people.

People: The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - John 1:3b-5

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 522)

Lord, when I came into this life you called me by my name; today I come, commit myself, responding to your claim.

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Children ages 3-10 are invited to exit to the narthex after the Peace of Christ where their teachers will take them to their classrooms. Threes, Fours & fives are in Room 011; K-3rd grades in Room 001; 4th-5th grades in Room 005.

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON  Isaiah 62:1-5 (page 651 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM  Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal  arr. Alice Parker

Hark, I hear the harps eternal ringing on the farther shore as I near those swollen waters, with their deep and solemn roar. Hallelujah, praise the lamb, glory to the great I AM. And my soul though stained with sorrow, fading as the light of day, passes swiftly o’er those waters to the city far away. Souls have crossed before me, saintly, to that land of perfect rest; and I hear them singing faintly in the mansions of the blest. Hallelujah, praise the lamb, glory to the great I AM.

THE GOSPEL LESSON  John 2:1-11 (page 54 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  “What Concern is that to You and Me?”  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN 422  God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending  BEACH SPRING

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED Drew Stockstill

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE CHORAL OFFERTORY  EMERALD STREAM  Seth Houston

*THE DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION

*THE HYMN 280  Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound  AMAZING GRACE

(verses 1 through 4)

*THE CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 280)

When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’d first begun.
