WORSHIP OCTOBER 18 2015
11 A.M. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Mathew Frease

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Prelude in C Major  J.S. Bach

Jonathan Crutchfield, organist

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: “Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, “The Lord is king!”

People: Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it.

Leader: Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth.

People: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.” – 1 Chronicles 16:31-34

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 285  God, You Spin the Whirling Planets  AUSTRIAN HYMN

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

“Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and soul and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy, forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.”
- Book of Common Worship

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

People: For all who are led by the spirit of God are children of God.

Leader: For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is that very spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

People: And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! – Romans 8:12-17

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 495)

*THE NICENE CREED

Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
