11 a.m. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Drew Stockstill

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Prelude in G major  J.S. Bach

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights!

People: Praise him, all his angels, praise him, all his hosts!

Leader: Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars!

People: Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!

Leader: Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he commanded and they were created.

People: He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.

Leader: Let us worship God, our creator, redeemer and sustainer. - Psalm 148:1-6

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 150  Come, Christians, Join to Sing

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, we know that we are your creation; made in your image; called to reflect your goodness. We know that in Jesus Christ, you have redeemed our brokenness and renewed our spirits. And yet, we know also that we are plagued by nagging doubts; perplexed by trying circumstances. We know that despite our best efforts, and sometimes due to our worst efforts, we have sinned. We know that sin pushes us away from the holy relationship we might have with you. We know that sin robs us of our joy and leaves us empty. We know all these things, but we cannot cleanse ourselves. So we ask your forgiveness and mercy. Bring us back into right relationship with you that we may witness to joy, for the sake of our crucified and risen Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

People: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

Leader: When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Colossians 3:1-4

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  (Hymn 422)

God, whose giving knows no ending, from your rich and endless store, nature’s wonder, Jesus’ wisdom, costly cross, grave’s shattered door: Gifted by you, we turn to you offering up our selves in praise; thankful song shall rise forever, gracious donor of our days.

THE PSALTER LESSON  Psalm 1  (page 463 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM  God Is Gone Up  Gerald Finzi

Gene Martin, guest conductor

God is gone up with a triumphant shout, the Lord with sounding trumpets’ melodies: Sing praise, sing praise, sing praises out, unto our king sing praise seraphic-wise! Lift up your heads, ye lasting doors, they sing, and let the king of glory enter in. Methinks I see heaven’s sparkling courtiers fly, in flakes of glory down him to attend, and hear heart-cramping notes of melody surround his chariot as it did ascend; mixing their music, making ev’ry string more to enravish as they this tune sing.

THE GOSPEL LESSON  John 17:6-19 (page 105 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  “I Have Sent Them Into the World”  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN 419  How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
