WORSHIP APRIL 26 2015
11 a.m. WORSHIP

THE GATHERING  Drew Stockstill

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Jesus Lead Thou On  Paul Manze

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.

People: Every day I will bless you, and praise your name forever and ever.

Leader: Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; his greatness is unsearchable.

People: We have come to worship God: Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. Amen.

- Psalm 145:1-3

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 423  Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful God, you have called us and we confess we do not know what that means. Where you have been clear that you want our whole selves, we have been confused, thinking instead we might give half-measure. Where you have told us what is required of us, we have substituted easy piety. Forgive our stiffnecked clinging to our own ideas about what your kingdom looks like and open our hearts to you. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray all these things. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: We do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wearing away, our inner nature is being renewed, day by day.

People: For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure.

Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - 2 Corinthians 4:16-17

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 288)

I sing the goodness of the Lord that filled the earth with food; God formed the creatures with a word and then pronounced them good. Lord, how thy wonders are displayed, where'er I turn my eyes; if I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the skies!

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY  Prayer in B flat  Alexandre Guilmant

THE PRESENTATION OF CONFIRMATION CLASS OF 2015

Leader: O God, with great purpose and love, you created each of these Confirmands, fashioned them in your image, filled them with your Holy Spirit and sent your son, Jesus Christ, to lead them as his disciples, teach them how to live and love, and through his death and resurrection keep them always in your loving arms.

People: Continue to strengthen their faith in your saving grace and build up their knowledge of your truth every day of their lives.

Leader: Lord Jesus, in your great compassion you call these Confirmands to be your disciples, to share your love with everyone and work for the good of your whole creation, as full members and equals with all the members of this church and all your people throughout the world.

People: Christ, our brother, help us to fulfill our baptismal vows and embrace these brothers and sisters as fellow disciples in your Beloved Community and always build up their confidence in your love, hold them accountable to the call you have given them and nurture them in the faith.

Leader: Holy Spirit, you have filled these brothers and sisters with your divine gifts; continue to speak your truth to them in the whirlwinds as well as in your still small voice. Bind them to you as you enable them to pray without ceasing.

People: O Holy Spirit, guard and protect these Confirmands for all eternity, keep us always united to one another and held in your loving embrace as they grow in faith and discern your will for them.

Leader: Holy Trinity, we thank you that you have blessed us with each of these lives and call us to be your church together. Help us to have the wisdom to lead them in right paths as well as the courage to follow them as they lead us in your will. Amen.
