WORSHIP MARCH 8 2015
THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT

THE GATHERING  Baron Mullis

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Olivet  Karl Osterland

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims God’s handiwork.

People: Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.

Leader: There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard;

People: yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

Leader: Let us worship the Lord. -Psalm 19:1-4

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 454  Blessed Jesus, at Your Word

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy creating God, giver of life and our eternal judge, out of your unending love you give us each the gift of life and equip us to live in joy and peace. You give us all we need to be your living temples - moving and breathing places of worship. Yet, we have turned the temple of your creation into a marketplace, exchanging your wealth of mercy for cheap condemnation of others, trading the warmth of your hope for cold worldly cynicism and exploiting the lives you have so beautifully given for quick profit and the illusion of comfort. Please forgive us, again. Turn over the tables of our hearts and rebuild the temple of our souls to house your mercy and extend your love to all. Amen.

THE KYRIE (Hymn 572)

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: We have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession.

People: For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin.

Leader: Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Believe the good news of the gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. -Hebrews 4:14-16

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  (Hymn 579)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

THE ANTHEM  If Thou But Suffer God To Guide Thee  Jody Lindh

If thou but suffer God to guide thee, and hope in him through all thy ways, he’ll give thee strength, whate’er betide thee, and bear thee through the evil days who trusts in God’s unchanging love builds on the rock that naught can move. Only be still and wait his leisure in cheerful hope, with heart content, to take whate’er thy father’s pleasure, and all-discerning love hath sent; nor doubt our inmost wants are known. To him who chose us for his own. Sing, pray, and keep his ways unswerving; in all thy labor faithful be, and trust his word, though undeserving, thou yet shalt find it true for thee; God never yet forsook in need. The soul that trusts in him indeed.

THE GOSPEL LESSON  John 2:13-22  (page 87 in the pew Bible, NT )

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
