WORSHIP FEBRUARY 8 2015
5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING  Drew Stockstill

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Prelude in C major  J.S. Bach

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Praise the Lord!

People: I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation.

Leader: Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them,

People: full of honor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever.

Leader: He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds;

People: the Lord is gracious and merciful.

Leader: Then let us worship God, creator, redeemer and sustainer. Amen.

- Psalm 111:1-4

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 420  God of Grace and God of Glory

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God, you call the whole earth to healing and reconciliation. All creation is called to sing of your amazing works. Where we have been wounded, you offer healing balm. Where we have injured others, you offer forgiveness. Where we cultivate brokenness, you bring grace and mercy. We are overwhelmed by your loving intentions for us. So, knowing the depth of your love for us, there is no fear in asking your blessing upon us. Make us whole. Give us hope. Keep us always safe in Jesus’s care, for it is in his name and for his sake that we make our prayers. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,

People: But we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin.

Leader: Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.            - Hebrews 4:15-16

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  (Hymn 579)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

THE RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON  Isaiah 40:21-31  (page 628 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM  Jesus Christ the Apple Tree  Elizabeth Poston

The tree of life my soul hath seen, laden with fruit and always green: The tree of life my soul hath seen, laden with fruit and always green: The trees of nature fruitless be compared with Christ the apple tree. His beauty doth all things excel: By faith I know, but ne’er can tell, his beauty doth all things excel: By faith I know, but ne’er can tell the glory which I now can see in Jesus Christ the apple tree. For happiness I long have sought, and pleasure dearly I have bought: for happiness I long have sought, and pleasure dearly I have bought: I missed of all; but now I see ’tis found in Christ the apple tree. I’m weary with my former toil, here I will sit and rest a while: I’m weary with my former toil, here I will sit and rest a while: Under the shadow I will be, of Jesus Christ the apple tree. This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, it keeps my dying faith alive: This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, it keeps my dying faith alive: Which makes my soul in haste to be with Jesus Christ the apple tree.

THE GOSPEL LESSON  Mark 1:29-39  (page 33 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  “The Whole City”  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN 356  Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
