WORSHIP NOVEMBER 30 2014
FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Thank you for making sure your cell phone is off during the worship hour.

THE GATHERING  Drew Stockstill

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme  J.S. Bach

THE LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH  Peter and Sarah Chatel

*Unison Prayer:

Eternal God, creator of all light and life, we give you thanks for the coming of the Christ, the light that shines in the darkness, the life of all people. Let us walk in the light of the Lord. Amen.

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 6  Jesus Comes with Clouds Descending

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O Lord, we do not know how to seek you. If we place our trust in worldly ways, we are left comfortless. If we seek to place ourselves in your place, we find your ways inscrutable, and our understanding is confused. Our sin obscures our knowledge of your goodness and mercy. Our transgressions cloud our vision of your holiness. We are unworthy to approach you. It is only because of the love you have for us that we are bold to come before your throne of grace, asking once more that you would forgive us and cleanse us and redirect us. Set our eyes on your ways and our feet on your paths, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE  (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children.

People: And because you are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son unto our hearts, crying. “Abba, Father!”

Leader: So you are no longer a slave, but a child, and if a child, then also an heir, through God. Believe the Promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! - Galatians 4:4-7

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  (Hymn 12)

People, look east. The time is near of the crowning of the year. Make your house fair as you are able, trim the hearth and set the table. People, look east: Love the guest is on the way.

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST

(Children ages 2-10 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Fours & fives in Room 011; K-1st grade in Room 001; 2nd-3rd grade in Room 003; 4th-5th grade in Room 005).

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON  Isaiah 64:1-9  (page 652 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM  Veiled in Darkness  Glenn Rudolph

Veiled in darkness Judah lay, waiting for the promised day, while across the shadowy night streamed a flood of glorious light, heav’nly voices chanting then, “Peace on earth, good will to men.” “Peace on earth, good will to men.”

Still the earth in darkness lies. Up from death’s dark vale arise voices of a world in grief, prayers of those who seek relief: Now our darkness pierce again, “Peace on earth, good will to men.” “Peace on earth, good will to men.”

Light of light, we humbly pray, shine upon Thy world today; break the gloom of our dark night, fill our souls with love and light, send Thy blessed Word again, “Peace on earth, good will to men.” “Peace on earth, good will to men.”

THE GOSPEL LESSON  Mark 13:24-37  (page 47 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  “When the Heavens Open”  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN 17  “Sleepers, Wake!” A Voice Astounds Us

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
