*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 473  For the Beauty of the Earth

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God, we have turned aside from our calling. We have indulged ourselves

to the detriment of others. We have centered on ourselves and forgotten your

call to love our neighbors. Offered life-transforming discipleship, we have

looked away. We are in danger of self-centered faith. We need to be reminded of

our best moments, challenged to repeat them often, and sustained in practice as

we seek to form faith. Forgive us, and turn us once more to you and to our calling.

In reminding us of our calling, give us the strength to follow through Jesus

Christ our Lord. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright and Godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and savior, Jesus Christ.

People: He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Titus 2:11-14

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 579)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

THE MINUTE MESSAGE  Eleanor Attwood

THE PSALTER LESSON  Psalm 90:1-12  (page 517 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM  Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal  Alice Parker

Hark, I hear the harps eternal ringing on the farther shore, as I near those swollen waters, with their deep and solemn roar.

Refrain: Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, praise the Lamb. Hallelujah, hallelujah, glory to the Great I am!

And my soul though stained with sorrow, fading as the light of day, passes swiftly o’er those waters to that city far away.

Some have crossed before us safely to that land of perfect rest. Can you hear them singing faintly in the mansion of the blest?

THE EPISTLE LESSON  2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12  (page 194 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  “The Chilling Conundrum of the Half-empty Offering Plate”  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN 554  Let All Things Now Living

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
