WORSHIP NOVEMBER 9 2014
32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Thank you for making sure your cell phone is off during the worship hour.

THE GATHERING Drew Stockstill

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Andante in D  Felix Mendelssohn

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: The Earth is the Lord’s, and all that is in it, the world and those who live in it.

People: For he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers.

Leader: Lift up your heads O gates, and be lifted up O ancient doors that the King of glory may come in.

People: Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory!

Leader: Let us worship God, who creates us, redeems us and sustains us. Amen.

- Psalm 24:1-2; 9-10

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 252  O Lord, You Are My God and King

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, creator of the winds and rains, sun and moon, the earth and all that is in it, too often we utter your praises without pausing to consider what it is we sing. Too often, our words bear no evidence that we bear the imprint of your Word. Too often, we mumble our joy, suppress our sorrow and live as though you do not matter. Forgive us, we pray, for our meaningless attempts to domesticate your justice. Break through into our hearts and lives and minds, and transform us by your power. Through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: “For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:

People: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’

Leader: For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.” Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. - 1 Corinthians 1:18-19; 25

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 412)

O God of righteousness and grace, seen in the Christ, thy Son whose life and death reveal thy face, by whom thy will was done: inspire thy heralds of good news to live thy life divine, till Christ is formed in every heart, and every land is thine!

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
