*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: “Praise the Lord, all you nations! Extol him, all you peoples!

People: For great is God’s steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!”

Leader: Let us worship God, who creates us, redeems us and sustains us. Amen.

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 260  A Might Fortress Is Our God

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, you have loved us from generation to generation. You have shown your faithfulness more often than we can recall. The stories of the Bible tell us of your steadfast mercy. Yet we live as though it would be better for us not to know. We live holding on to past hurts; we are not open to your new creation. We pre-fer the safety of what we know to the excitement of discipleship. Forgive us, we pray, and make us again as you would have us be. We make all of our prayers in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE  (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

People: Therefore, beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. - 1 Corinthians 15:55-58

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 325, verse 3)

Come as the fire and purge our hearts like sacrificial flame; and let our whole soul and offering be to our Redeemer’s name.

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Fa-ther Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life ever-lasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
