28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Thank you for making sure your cell phone is off during the worship hour.

THE GATHERING  Baron Mullis

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Improvisation

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Praise the Lord. Give thanks for God's goodness.

People: God's steadfast love endures forever.

Leader: Happy are those who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times.

People: Save us, O Lord, and gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name, and glory in your praise.

Leader: Come and worship God! -Psalm106: 1-3, 47-48

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 371  Lift High The Cross

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy and compassionate God, all that is good in the world and in our lives are a

gift from you. You shower us with unconditional love and grace. When we feel

lost and alone, when we suffer, you are with us, providing comfort and hope.

These truths should lead us to rejoice and sing your praise, but we confess we are

still so often full of worry and anxiety about so much. Often when we cannot see

you or are distressed about our lives, we doubt your goodness, we deny your

presence and we grasp at the shadows of idols for a sense of control. Help us, O

God, in our unbelief so that we may bring everything to you in prayer. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say Rejoice.

People: Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.

Leader: Do not worry about anything. Believe the good news of the Gospel:

People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! -Philippians 4: 4-6

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 485)

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son, and give him the glory: great things he hath done!

THE MINUTE MESSAGE  Joanna and Ian Irwin

THE EPISTLE LESSON  Philippians 4:1-9 (page 187 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM  The Lord is My Shepherd  John Rutter

Dane Philipsen, oboist

The Lord is my shepherd; therefore can I lack nothing. He shall feed me in a green pasture, and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort. He shall convert my soul, and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness, for his Name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For thou art with me: Thy rod and thy staff comfort me. Thou shalt prepare a table before me against them that trouble me: thou hast anointed my head with oil and my cup shall be full. But thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. - Psalm 23

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON  Exodus 32:1-14 (page 75 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE SERMON “He Went to Jared” Drew Stockstill

*THE HYMN 276  Great Is Thy Faithfulness

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus

Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born

of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and

buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he

ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe

in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness

of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and

the glory, forever. Amen.
