WORSHIP AUGUST 24 2014
21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Thank you for making sure your cell phone is off during the worship hour.

THE GATHERING  Drew Stockstill
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Prelude from Opus 18, No. 3  César Franck

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: I will bless the Lord at all times; God’s praise shall continually be in my mouth.
People: My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.
Leader: O Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.
People: Let us worship the Lord our God. - Psalm 34:1-3

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 425  Lord of Light, Your Name Outshining

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, we have turned our eyes from your goodness. Where you have been
exceedingly gracious to us, we have seen only hardness. Where you have acted
on our behalf, we see instead coincidence. Where our prayers were not answered
to our satisfaction, we assume indifference. Our hearts are hardened to
the mystery of your presence among us. Forgive us we pray, and open our eyes
to all of your blessings. Make us aware of the gracious benefits you have given
us, and always, keep us in your care. It is in the name of Jesus Christ that we
pray. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
People: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Leader: When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Colossians 3:1-4

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 326)
Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; wean it from earth, through all its pulses
move; stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou art, and make me love thee as I
ought to love.

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-10 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Threes, fours & fives in Room 011; K-1st grade in Room 001; 2nd-3rd grade in Room 003; 4th-5th grade in Room 005).

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE MINUTE FOR MISSION  Carrie Branon

THE PSALTER LESSON  Psalm 138  Roland Behm
(page 545 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE ANTHEM  Christ is Made the Sure Foundation  Dale Wood
Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and corner stone; chosen of the Lord, and precious, binding all the church in one; holy Zion’s help forever, and her confidence alone. To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of hosts today; with thy wonted loving kindness hear thy servants as they pray, and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls always. Laud and honor to the father, laud and honor to the son, laud and honor to the spirit, ever three and ever one, one in might and one in glory, while unending ages run.

THE EPISTLE LESSON  Romans 12:1-8 (page 151 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE SERMON  “Transformed”  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN 522  Lord, When I Came Into This Life

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in
Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from
the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God
the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and
the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and
the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power
and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ  J.S. Bach
