WORSHIP AUGUST 10 2014
19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Thank you for making sure your cell phone is off during the worship hour.

THE GATHERING  Drew Stockstill
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Prière à Notre-Dame from Suite Gothique  Léon Boëllmann

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
People: Day to day pours forth speech and night declares knowledge.
Leader: There is no speech nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.
People: The heavens are telling the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Let us worship God!
Leader: Let us worship God, creator, redeemer and sustainer. Amen. - Psalm 19:1-4

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 288  I Sing the Mighty Power of God

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God, we know that we may rest in the promises of our baptism – we know
that your grace rests on us this day and every day. Never for a moment are we
outside of your constant care. And yet, things happen. Life tumbles in and your
promises seem distant. We retreat into fear. We worry about what we cannot
change. Forgive our anxious fears. Lead us to be the people you created us to
be: disciples of Jesus Christ, in whose name we name our prayers. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
People: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Leader: When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Colossians 3:1-4

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 316)
Breathe on me, breath of God, till I am wholly thine, until this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine.

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in
Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from
the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God
the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and
the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and
the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power
and the glory, forever. Amen.
