WORSHIP JUNE 22 2014
12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING  Landon Dillard
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE  Air  Gerre Hancock

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.
People: Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.
Leader: Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.
People: For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be revered above all gods. For all the gods of the people are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.
Leader: Let us worship God, who creates, redeems and sustains us. Amen.
- Psalm 96:1-5

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 476  O Worship the King, All Glorious Above

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, we know that when we trust in you, our fears subside, our worries lessen, and you are pleased for us. We know that the stories of our faith are stories of your consistent goodness, constant faithfulness and never-ending love. All that we should believe tells us you are a god of infinite kindness. And yet, circumstances conspire to rob us of this assurance. Sometimes our lives teach us not to trust. Sometimes even the lessons we received in church cause us to fear you. Whatever our reasons, sometimes our trust is broken. Forgive us, we pray, and teach us once more to remember that you are good and that all that comes from you is meant for our good. Through Jesus Christ our savior we pray, Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: “See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them.
People: He will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.”
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Revelation 21:3-4

*THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 285)
God, your word is still creating, calling us to life made new. Now reveal to us fresh
vistas where there’s work to dare and do. Keep us clear of all distortion. Polish us with
loving care. Thus, new creatures in your image, we’ll proclaim Christ everywhere.

*THE PEACE OF CHRIST
(Children ages 3-10 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Threes, fours & fives are in Room 011; K-2nd grade in Room 003; 3rd-5th grade in Room 001).

THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH
(Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.)

THE EPISTLE LESSON  Romans 6:1-11  Sarah Mercer Chatel
(page 146 in the pew Bible, NT)

THE ANTHEM  Lord for thy Tender Mercy’s Sake  Richard Farrant
Lord, for thy tender mercy’s sake lay not our sins to our charge but forgive that is past and give us
grace to amend our sinful lives; to decline from sin and incline to virtue, that we may walk in a perfect
heart before thee now and evermore.

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON  Genesis 21:8-21 (page 16 in the pew Bible, OT)

THE SERMON  “God of the Troubled”  Baron Mullis

*THE HYMN 282  If Thou but Trust in God to Guide Thee

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED  Drew Stockstill
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in
Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from
the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God
the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and
the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and
the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power
and the glory, forever. Amen.
