WORSHIP FEBRUARY 16, 2014
6TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE GATHERING Drew Stockstill
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Prelude in G Major Felix Mendelssohn
Sarah Martin, organist

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul!
People: I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God
all my life long.
Leader: Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their
God, who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them.
People: Who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed;
who gives food to the hungry.
Leader: The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous.
People: The Lord watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the
widow but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
Leader: Let us worship God who creates us, sustains us and redeems us.
- Psalm 146:1-2; 5-9

* THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 478 Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, we confess there are times when faith is not easy. There are
times when the claim of the Gospel upon our lives is costly. There are times
when we would turn aside onto an easier path rather than face what your promises
would elicit from us. Forgive us when in our living we fail to do and be what
you have called for from us. Forgive us when we cannot remember that it is you
who have carried us through the years. And in forgiving us, give us encouragement
that we may be strengthened in our faith and live out the calling you have
given us. We pray all these things in Jesus’ name and for his sake. Amen.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession)

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: God so loved the world that he sent his only son, so that whoever believes in him may
not perish but have eternal life.
People: Indeed, God sent the son not into the world that the world might be
condemned but so that the world through him might be saved.
Leader: Believe the promise of the Gospel:
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - John 3:16-17

* THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 473)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and for-give us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, for-ever. Amen.
